Tastings Of Archipelago

Several Slow Food Maui folks were spotted at Tastings Of Archipelago event night before last—Susan Campbell, Roxanne Tiffin and Peter Liu among them.

The event was a fundraiser for the Lahainaluna Agricultural Department Youth At Risk program held at Archipelago Maui, hosted by our own Dania Katz of Edible Hawaiian Islands. The food was amazing!

Yesterday’s Slow Food Maui Taste Education event at Ali’i Kula Lavender during their Family Fun Day was a great success.

We brought awareness to the differences between imported vs. locally grown or raised food, not just in terms of sustainability and the carbon footprint involved, but in the flavors you can only get from food that comes fresh from your local sources.

Becky Speere, corporate Chef at the Maui Cattle Company, outdid herself with some wonderful burgers that were part of a tasting plate with locally grown fruits and vegetables.

Also on hand were Susan Campbell, Dania Katz and Roxanne Tiffin.

We sold 30 plates at $5.00 each, had $12.00 in donations and signed up 12 people. We also have 2 mew members who want to be involved. In addition, O’o Farm offered to host Slow Food Maui at our next event.

It’s likely that Taste Education will become a signature event for Slow Food Maui.

Successful Fundraiser And Membership Drive At Whole Foods Maui

Chris Speere serving a plate lunch. We had a great day at our first fundraiser and membership drive at Whole Foods Maui in Kahului yesterday. The event was scheduled for 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and we sold out around 1:30 p.m.

Slow Food Maui Fundraiser
Our menu consisted of two plate lunches, a grilled Maui Cattle Co. beef burger or a salmon burger served with homemade asian coleslaw, sweet potato fries and a beverage.

Slow Food Maui fundraiserIn all, we raised close to $700 for the cause and signed up about 30 people for the mailing list, several of whom verbally committed to helping the organization grow.

Special thanks to Chris and Becky Speere for bringing help in the form of two student chefs from the Maui Culinary Academy, to Tylun Pang, Executive Chef of The Fairmont Kea Lani and to Roxanne Tiffin, owner of Kula Fields for helping us make this a success.
